Laurel (Julianne Moore) is a highly experienced detective with 23 years on the job, and she has never lost a case to any of her male colleagues. However, she has a secret: she is a lesbian, and to protect her position in the police department, she must keep this secret under wraps. One day, at an event, Laurel meets a woman named Daisy (Elliot Page), a mechanic. Despite their vast differences in identity and age, they are drawn to each other and eventually become romantically involved. Sadly, Laurel discovers that she has cancer and does not have long to live. She plans to transfer her pension to Daisy's name to ensure that she can keep her house after Laurel's passing, but her application is soon denied.
