Władysław Strzemiński was once a beloved university professor and a renowned avant-garde painter. When Stalin proposed "socialist realism," which was upheld by Polish authorities as the standard and demanded compliance from all levels, he stood on the side of dissent. As a result, he was not only dismissed from his position and stripped of his identity as an artist, but even his right to a livelihood was trampled upon.
