Sister Helen (Susan Sarandon) is requested by death row inmate Matthew Poncelet (Sean Penn) to visit him in prison. Matthew denies murdering a young couple and is sentenced to death, appealing his conviction. Helen travels through the village, investigating the truth. On one side are the brutally murdered innocent couple, and on the other, the emotional support of the soon-to-be-executed criminal. Helen exhausts all means to help Matthew, but when faced with the grief of the victims' parents and public outrage, she finds herself in a moral dilemma. Ultimately, Helen touches Matthew's heart. Before his execution, Matthew confesses his crimes and seeks forgiveness from the victims' families, completing his final 168 hours of life with peace and dignity. This film is based on the true story of Sister Helen Prejean, and Susan Sarandon won the Best Actress award at the 68th Academy Awards for her performance.
