The story takes place in the last days of the search for the Holy Grail. When King Arthur's knights ride through a dark and perilous jungle and return to Camelot (Arthur's palace) empty-handed, their ranks are disbanded and morale plummets. Among them is a knight named Lancelot, who feels deep remorse for the failure. He believes that his affair with Queen Guinevere has destroyed this sacred mission. The shadow of failure looms over everything, and the once splendid court reflects the decay of an era that is about to end.
