In the 1920s, during an afternoon recording in Chicago, the band members are waiting for the pioneering performer, the legendary "Mother of the Blues," Ma Rainey (played by Oscar winner Viola Davis), and the atmosphere becomes increasingly tense. As the recording progresses, the fearless and fiery Ma engages in a battle of wills with her white manager and producer over control of her music. Ambitious trumpeter Levy (played by Chadwick Boseman) admires Ma’s girlfriend and is determined to carve out a place for himself in the music industry. While the band waits in the studio's cramped rehearsal room, he prompts the musicians to reveal stories that will forever change their lives. This film, "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom," is adapted from the play by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson, celebrating the transformative power of blues and artists who refuse to let societal prejudices define their worth. Directed by George C. Wolfe, with the screenplay adapted by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, the film is produced by Oscar-nominated Denzel Washington and Todd Black, who collaborated on "Fences." The ensemble cast features Colman Domingo, Glynn Turman, Michael Potts, Taylour Paige, Da'Vinchi, and is scored by Emmy winner Branford Marsalis.
