Jasmine (Cate Blanchett) finds her life shattered when her husband Hal is arrested for business fraud and ultimately takes his own life in prison. Left broke, she flees New York for San Francisco to live with her sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins). From a life of luxury, Jasmine is thrust into the world of ordinary people, leading to her mental breakdown as she often talks to herself and reminisces about the past, feeling out of place around others. She dislikes Ginger's ex-husband Augie and is even more put off by Ginger's current boyfriend, Chill. Jasmine finds a job at a dental office and returns to school, but her life remains a mess. It isn't until she meets a charming, handsome, and wealthy government official at a party that things seem to improve. Just as Jasmine's life appears to be on track and they prepare to buy an engagement ring, the appearance of Ginger's ex-husband Augie throws her world into chaos once again...
