The story recounts a true event from the American Civil Rights Movement. In 1955, 14-year-old Emmett Louis Till was accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a white woman, after which he was kidnapped and brutally murdered. Two white suspects were acquitted by an all-white jury. Emmett's mother, Mamie Till-Mobley (played by Danielle Deadwyler), decided to open the casket at her son’s funeral and have Jet magazine publish photos of the funeral, wanting people all over the world to know about her son's fate. As a result, thousands saw Emmett's photos, which made the case a symbol of the injustice faced by Black people in the South. Whoopi Goldberg plays Emmett's grandmother, Alma Carthan.
