The story takes place during World War II, where Simon (played by Bill Skarsgård) grows up in an ordinary working-class family. Although his father and mother deeply love and care for Simon, he always feels a sense of estrangement and unfamiliarity within the family, even he does not understand why. Simon loves reading, but there is a lack of such an atmosphere in his family. Despite his father's opposition, Simon decides to enter school to learn. At school, Simon befriends a Jewish boy named Isaac (played by Karl Linnertorp), whose father is an author. The two quickly become good friends with much in common. By chance, Simon is shocked to discover that he is not the biological child of his parents, and he decides to embark on a journey to find his real family.
