The story takes place during the Korean War, where Air Force Major Lloyd (portrayed by Marlon Brando) earns the trust and affection of the general, enjoying a bright future ahead. Lloyd is dispatched to Japan, where he encounters a Japanese lead dancer named Anon (portrayed by Machiko Kyo). Anon's exotic charm deeply captivates Lloyd, and he finds himself irresistibly in love. However, at that time, policies prohibited American soldiers from dating or marrying Japanese individuals, so both Lloyd and Anon suppress their feelings deep within their hearts. Kelly (portrayed by Red Buttons), Lloyd's subordinate, shares a similar experience, as he also falls in love with a Japanese woman. However, unlike Lloyd, Kelly chooses to remain loyal to his lover, even at the cost of his life. Kelly's death plunges Lloyd into deep reflection.
