A pair of brothers living in Alaska, Miles and Liam, are deep in debt and devise a scheme to turn a profit. The older brother, Miles, persuades his brother Liam and his girlfriend Lauren to create an illusion—going solo to the Alaskan mountains for ten days and then returning, while having Liam sell this gripping story to the media for a fortune. To make the event appear credible, Liam and Miles get into a fight and guide him to a pre-arranged cave. Bruised and battered, Liam returns to report to the media about his brother's disappearance, prompting a city-wide search and alerting the police. Lauren's father, Jim, conducts an in-depth investigation but discovers that things are far from simple, as Miles has serious debt problems. Liam's diary documenting the orchestrated event also betrays them, and while in custody, he gets a severe lesson from Miles' creditor, Joe. As the expected time passes and Miles has not returned, Liam and Lauren begin to worry. When Miles is found on the brink of death, Liam and Lauren decide to sell the story as originally intended. Amid growing disagreements, Joe takes Miles hostage and threatens Liam, leading to Jim's death during the chase, and Lauren kills Joe in self-defense. Lauren fabricates another story for the media while Liam struggles to accept reality.
