The story takes place in the picturesque Buenos Aires, Argentina. Carlos (portrayed by Antonio Banderas) is a playwright who has gained considerable fame for writing several successful scripts. Carlos has been married to his wife Cecilia (portrayed by Emma Thompson) for many years, and their relationship has always been very loving. Cecilia is a journalist known in her field, and she and Carlos are regarded by friends as a golden couple, very well-matched. One day, however, Cecilia is secretly detained in a concentration camp due to a news article she wrote that touched a sensitive nerve with the authorities. With his wife’s life hanging in the balance, Carlos is plunged into despair and pain, willing to do anything to bring her back to his side. Strangely, since Cecilia's disappearance, Carlos discovers he has acquired a special ability – he can find the whereabouts of others who have been secretly arrested by looking at their photographs, just like Cecilia.
