A biographical film about the master of Peking opera, Mr. Mei Lanfang, but with many depictions that do not align with historical facts. The uncle, who had sung for most of his life, was granted a paper shackle after not wearing red during the Empress Dowager's birthday celebration due to a funeral at home. Young Mei Lanfang carried a letter left by him before his death and began to follow the famous old Peking opera performer Shisan Yan (Wang Xueqi), who had a long-standing relationship with the Mei family, to learn about acting and life. Ten years later, Mei Lanfang (Yu Shaoqun) stood out in the pear garden, hoping to live a life of honesty on and off the stage. Qiu Rubai (Sun Honglei), a director of a legal bureau studying drama art deeply, was full of complaints about traditional Peking opera but couldn't contain his excitement after watching Mei Lanfang's performance, and he wrote him a letter of encouragement and suggestions. Mei Lanfang also wanted to innovate his performances and was very grateful to Qiu Rubai. Throughout their correspondence and heartfelt conversations, Mei Lanfang deepened and renewed his understanding of Peking opera while gaining a lifelong simple friendship from "Third Brother" Qiu Rubai. However, this led to disagreements between Mei Lanfang and Shisan Yan. Influenced by busybodies, they decided to compete against each other, and Mei Lanfang emerged victorious, ushering in his own era. Mei Lanfang's success was due not only to his exceptional insight and Qiu Rubai's constant encouragement in art but also because the wealthy banker "Sixth Master" Feng Ziguan (Ying Da) generously supported him financially. Subsequently, Mei Lanfang (Leon Lai) married Fu Zhifang (Chen Hong) and attempted to live as a captivating woman on stage and an average man off stage, but it proved difficult, like wearing a "paper shackle": after meeting the popular male performer Meng Xiaodong (Zhang Ziyi), he became her spiritual partner, but they regretfully missed each other; during the Anti-Japanese War, in order to maintain his integrity, he grew a beard and painfully left the stage he loved. Meanwhile, his international performance in the United States, which helped him shine on the world stage, encountered many obstacles.
