In the 1980s, 19-year-old Kitamachi Kanta (played by Mirai Moriyama), who had a bleak childhood, leads a life of hopeless decadence. He dropped out of school at a young age, ran away from home, and has a grumpy personality full of insecurities and shamelessness, telling various lies to evade paying rent; all the money he earns from working hard is squandered in brothels, with reading being the only interest he seemingly possesses. In the factory, he becomes friends with the handsome and intelligent newcomer Masaru Kusakabe (played by Kengo Kora). Despite their completely different backgrounds, the reclusive Kanta begins to taste the beauty of friendship. With Masaru's support, Kanta musters the courage to ask out the bookstore girl he has long admired, Yasuko Sakurai (played by Atsuko Maeda). The three young people break down barriers and play happily together under a gloomy sky, experiencing a fleeting moment of youthful beauty... This film is adapted from the autobiographical novel by Kenta Nishimura and won fifth place in the 2012 Kinema Junpo's Best Ten Films.
