Retired teacher Grant (played by Gordon Pinsent) and his wife Fiona (played by Julie Christie) have been together for 44 years, living a peaceful and comfortable life. However, the elegant and noble Fiona develops dementia, and her memory begins to decline, becoming increasingly severe. Fiona decides to move into a care home, and her loving husband Grant has no choice but to compromise. The couple, who have never been apart, must not see each other for a month after Fiona is admitted. When Grant finally appears before Fiona, he finds that she seems to have forgotten him and has fallen in love with another resident of the care home, Aubrey. Faced with this sudden change, Grant feels lost. Just then, Aubrey leaves the care home, causing Fiona to feel very uneasy. Grant finds Aubrey's wife and persuades her to send her husband back to the care home, but Aubrey's wife, Marianne, is unwilling to lose their current home due to the high cost of care, as the house means everything to her. However, in the end, Marianne is moved by Grant's genuine feelings, and unable to bear the pain of his wife, Grant brings Aubrey back to the care home, but Fiona's reaction leaves Grant astonished...
