In 1865, the four-year-long American Civil War was coming to an end, and President Abraham Lincoln (played by Daniel Day-Lewis) was entering his second term. In the last four months of his life and presidency, Lincoln was dedicated to a battle more arduous than the Civil War: pushing for the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in Congress. This amendment would permanently abolish the existence of slavery in the United States. However, the timing of the proposal was extremely poor: there was a lack of public support for abolitionism; Congress was dominated by conservative forces; and radical supporters of abolition were dissatisfied with Lincoln's style. When the seceded Southern states expressed a willingness to return to the negotiating table and end the war, Lincoln found himself facing a painful dilemma: should he seek a compromise peace or adhere to his moral convictions? Should he end slavery or end the war? “If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong.” Based on the historical book "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln," adapted by Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner and directed by Oscar director Steven Spielberg, the biographical epic "Lincoln," starring two-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, brings the audience closer to Lincoln's greatest achievement: the abolition of slavery. The Lincoln depicted in the film is a flexible and wise politician as well as a strategic military leader; he is a grieving father who lost a beloved son and a husband filled with guilt. When his country was at its most bewildering moment, Lincoln, with extraordinary foresight, looked beyond the war and devoted all his efforts to the grand game of changing the direction of a nation. He wanted to persuade the American people that when people of different colors looked up, they would see the same starry sky.
