In the winter of 1931, after the September 18 Incident, a small town in Zhejiang, like many places across the country, witnessed a movement to boycott Japanese goods. Lin Mingxiu (played by Ma Wei), the daughter of the owner of "Linyuanji," was scorned by her classmates for wearing a qipao made from Japanese fabric. She returned home in tears, blaming her father for selling so many Eastern goods. At that moment, Lin's father (played by Xie Tian) was also troubled by the county party's order to stop selling Eastern goods. Reluctantly, he decided to label Eastern goods as "domestic products" for sale. As the New Year approached, which was a time for debt collection, all the shops started to discount their goods to compete with each other. The news of the "One-Two-Eight" Shanghai battle added new worries for Lin's father since he still owed money to a Shanghai trading company. When a Shanghai client (played by Chen Shu) came to demand payment, Lin's father had no choice but to borrow from a moneylender, who not only refused but also demanded he pay back his debts.
