Elsa (Shirley MacLaine) is elderly and lives a lonely life by herself. One day, an old man named Fred (Christopher Plummer) moves in next door. Fred has just lost his wife and is living under a shadow of grief. Although Elsa and Fred are completely different people, over time, their weary hearts start to draw closer together. Fred gradually emerges from his sorrow with Elsa's companionship, and Elsa finds hope and meaning in life because of Fred's presence. However, Elsa has been hiding a secret all along: she is seriously ill and has little time left. Furthermore, many of the past stories she has told Fred are mostly fabricated. When Fred learns the truth, what choice will he make?
