Soon after, the "September 18th Incident" breaks out, and Japan invades Northeast China, killing the granddaughter's parents. The young man is captured, but during a surprise attack by the volunteer army on the Japanese forces, he seizes the chance to escape back to the shop. There, he encounters a lecherous Japanese sergeant who is about to assault the shopkeeper's granddaughter, and he kills the sergeant. They flee the area, and after the "July 7 Incident," the young man and the granddaughter, along with others, resist Japanese oppression by joining the volunteer army to fight against the Japanese invaders. The film has received high praise from critics. The director employs a distinctive style, using vivid montage language; the shots are subtle, concise, and powerful, capturing many scenes authentically and dramatically. The sound effects complement the visuals, creating a unified artistic image. For example, the opening scenes of the welcoming and sending-off of vehicles showcase the rural life and customs of Northeast China, providing a unique flavor. The film’s musical interlude is also one of the successful examples of incorporating musical pieces in Chinese cinema. During the song "Song of the Four Seasons" sung by the girl, various scenes and changes in montage effectively convey the emotions and atmosphere of the time, achieving a combination of lyrical expression and environmental depiction.
