The story takes place in New York in the 1930s. Jack (played by Dennis Quaid) is a member of a union, diligently doing his part. One day, an unexpected event makes Jack realize that the union he has always trusted may not embody correctness and justice. As a result, disillusioned, Jack chooses to leave the East Coast and moves to Los Angeles alone. In Los Angeles, Jack is taken in by a woman living in the Japanese neighborhood, who provides him with a job. During this time, Jack meets the woman's daughter, Lily (played by Tamlyn Tomita). Despite significant cultural differences, they fall in love and decide to get married. However, at that time, California's laws did not support interracial marriage, and their path to marriage is long and full of challenges.
