Heller (Emil Jannings) is a performer in the juggling troupe. He and his wife Bertna (Maly Delschaft) have a popular flying trapeze act that captivates the audience. However, as time passes, Bertna's figure changes, making her no longer suitable for the trapeze performances. Reluctantly, Heller brings her to another juggling troupe in Hamburg, Germany, to make a living. Belt (Lya De Putti) is a frequent audience member who, after meeting Heller, begins to try performing on stage. To everyone’s surprise, Belt's performances become wildly popular, and she quickly becomes a star of the juggling troupe. As they spend more time together, Heller falls in love with the young and beautiful Belt, ruthlessly abandoning his wife to elope with her.
