Jacek Lazar (played by Miroslaw Baka) is a twenty-one-year-old man who wanders the streets, scaring away pigeons in the square, throwing stones at cars from a bridge, and having a photo from his pocket, which is already creased, enlarged at a photo shop. Waldemar Rekowski (played by Jan Tesarz) is an ordinary taxi driver who flirts with young women, teases passengers, and deliberately honks his horn to scare animals; his next passenger is Jacek. Piotr Balicki (played by Krzysztof Globisz) is a young lawyer who believes that punishment does not prevent crime, and that preventing crime is the purpose of the law. He has just passed the bar exam and is defending the murderer Jacek. Jacek gets into Waldemar's taxi, and they drive out to the countryside, where Jacek strangles the driver with a rope. Balicki does his best to defend Jacek, hoping to avoid the death penalty, but Jacek is ultimately sentenced to death. Before his execution, Jacek has a long conversation with Balicki, discussing how he caused a truck driver, with whom he had been drinking, to run over his sister...
