This musical DVD is based on the life of Jesus, with Webber innovatively linking serious religious stories and avant-garde rock music. It is a work that exhibits bold artistic expression and profound ideological depth. If "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" is an illustration of biblical stories, then "Superstar" appears, on the surface, to be a subversion and reaction against tradition: the Son of God, Jesus, is no longer constantly bearing a halo of sacred wisdom; he shows weakness and uncertainty, with more humanity replacing divinity. Judas's betrayal is not driven by greed but by a fate ordained by God. After his suicide, Judas, dressed in white robes, leads a choir of angels to pose several philosophical questions to Jesus, who surprisingly does not know the answers. Observant readers can easily see that this plot arrangement shares similarities with the film "The Last Temptation of Christ." Like the latter, this play faced strong protests from orthodox religious groups upon its release, which ironically increased its notoriety. Its songs, "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Superstar," lingered on major music charts for a long time. I feel that the intention of this play is the same as that of "The Last Temptation of Christ": it is not about straying from orthodoxy but rather about expressing the martyr's obedience to God through a convoluted form. In the end, Jesus sacrifices himself for humanity's sins as per God's arrangement, resurrects, and ascends to heaven after forgiving his enemies. If you have a deeper understanding of Christianity, I believe this play can offer you some unique perspectives. Of course, even setting aside the background, this DVD is a must-see as a rock musical. Another version of the play is the 1973 film of the same name produced by Universal Pictures. The biblical film provides a more intimate feel. The songs composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber are beautifully melodious, and the cinematography and editing throughout the film are of first-rate quality.
