The story takes place in the remote Yakutian primeval forest of Siberia, where Sergey (Yevgeni Urbansky), Andrei (Vasili Livanov), Danya (Tatyana Samojlova), and Sabinin (Innokenti Smoktunovsky) are four members of a geological exploration team. They are exploring the area in hopes of finding precious diamond deposits. In the vast primeval forest, finding a small deposit is exceedingly difficult; the four work tirelessly for days but find nothing, falling into despair. However, at this crucial moment, Danya accidentally digs up a diamond, indicating that the deposit is nearby. The exploration team maps the location, preparing to take it back to headquarters when suddenly a raging fire erupts in the forest. Amidst the smoke and flames, the group pays a heavy price to protect the map.
