In the 1970s, the young Scottish doctor Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy) arrives in impoverished Uganda, filled with ambitious ideals of saving lives for the poor. Here, he meets his white colleague from the medical association, the beautiful Sarah (Gillian Anderson), and becomes deeply attracted to her. At a gathering, Nicholas has the chance to meet Ugandan President Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker), and Amin's speeches fascinate Nicholas, leading to a near fanatical admiration. After the event, he saves Amin from an accident, earning recognition due to his Scottish identity. He then gets closer to the brutal ruler in the role of the president's personal physician... The film is adapted from Giles Foden's novel of the same name, and the male lead, Forest Whitaker, won the Best Actor Award at the 79th Academy Awards for this role.
