The story takes place in early Republican Beijing. Han Yuanyong (played by Song Dandan) loses her father at a young age, and her mother (played by Siqin Gaowa) remarries Cui Wu (played by Sun Benhou). Cui supports Yuanyong's education, but unexpectedly dies, leaving the mother and daughter in a difficult situation again. Forced by life, the mother becomes a disgraceful prostitute, and Yuanyong feels ashamed, choosing to live at school instead. Soon after graduating from high school, she struggles to find a job, and Gao Junsheng (played by Liao Jingsheng), who is already married, becomes infatuated with Yuanyong's youth and beauty, providing her with food and lodging. Yuanyong feels grateful and offers herself in return. Gao's wife, Meng Shuxian (played by Yuan Li), discovers her husband is keeping a mistress and comes looking for answers, leading Yuanyong to realize that she is merely Gao Junsheng's plaything. Without a source of income, Yuanyong becomes a waitress at a restaurant but is fired for rejecting the advances of customers. Ultimately, she turns to prostitution and uses the money she earns to support her aging, disheveled mother who has become a beggar...
