Isabel Archer (Nicole Kidman) is young and beautiful, proud and headstrong, capturing the hearts of many men, yet she desires to live freely. She rejects the proposal of Lord Warburton at a garden estate in England. Later, she visits her cousin Ralph and his girlfriend in London, where she also rejects the proposal from Goodwood. At her cousin's home, she meets the poised and beautiful Madame Merle. In Florence, Merle introduces her to the penniless yet highly cultured Osmond (John Malkovich). Osmond falls in love with Isabel, and she gradually falls in love with him as well. A year later, Isabel marries Osmond. However, their son dies in the cradle. Later, she learns of her cousin's critical illness and, against her husband's wishes, goes to see Ralph one last time, only to have her sister-in-law reveal a secret to her... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by the renowned American author Henry James.
