Guests arrive at the Seneschal's house for a dinner, only to discover that the dinner is scheduled for tomorrow night. They have no choice but to go to a small tavern, but their plan is thwarted again as the tavern is holding a vigil for its recently deceased owner. Another gathering is canceled at the last minute because the Seneschal couple sneaks out of their home to be intimate; the guests mistakenly believe that the police are about to raid the place and quickly make their escape. The next dinner is also interrupted unexpectedly when a marching troop shows up at the Seneschal's mansion. Even nightmares provide material for their thwarted efforts to hold a dinner: they happily take their seats, only to find, inexplicably, that the curtain nearby suddenly rises, and they become performers dining on stage. On another occasion, a colonel publicly insults the so-called Republic of Miranda in front of Ambassador Don Rafael, nearly causing a diplomatic disaster, not to mention that evening's dinner. Thus, the six characters in the film (including the Seneschal couple and Ambassador Don Rafael) keep trying to sit down to dinner but are faced with unexpected obstacles that prevent them from eating.
