Musician Rudy (played by Alan Cumming) encounters district attorney Paul (played by Garret Dillahunt) during a drag performance, and they fall in love at first sight. After returning home that night, Rudy struggles to rest due to the loud noise from his neighbors. When he angrily confronts them, he is surprised to find that the only person inside is a short, chubby boy named Marco (played by Isaac Leyva). Rudy tries to contact Paul to discuss a strategy, but due to Marco's congenital intellectual disability and his mother's arrest for drug use, the child welfare agency soon takes Marco away. Later, when Rudy and Paul see Marco wandering the streets alone, they decide, without much thought, to bring the boy back home. After much discussion, they decide to adopt Marco and provide him with a stable living environment. However, during the court's review of their guardianship, their sexual orientation is discovered, and the legal system looms like a heavy shackle, threatening to sever their relationship with the boy, who has special needs but whom they cherish as their own...... This film is based on a true story set in 1970s California, depicting how a same-sex couple fights against narrow societal views and the legal system to gain custody of a boy with an intellectual disability. The film won the Audience Choice Award at the 2012 Chicago International Film Festival, Palm Springs International Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, and Tribeca Film Festival in New York.
