This film is adapted from the autobiography of former South African President Nelson Mandela, published in 1994. He was a barefoot village boy wandering the hills; he was a passionate young lawyer shouting for freedom; he was an armed revolutionary leader against the government; he was a political prisoner imprisoned, exiled, and forced into labor for 27 years; he was the first black president elected in South Africa's democratic elections. His name is Mandela. Mandela (played by Idris Elba) dedicated his life to resisting apartheid. He transformed from a revolutionary warrior into a peace fighter, turning a deeply divided nation into a land of equality and harmony, setting an example for the world, but at a heavy price. At 43, Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment for attempting to overthrow the government, separated from his wife Winnie (played by Naomie Harris), and lost the opportunity to be present for his grandchildren's growth. Even after 27 years of imprisonment, when he finally regained his freedom and became a revered president and hero, he lost the woman he loved most—years of separation and political persecution distanced the couple further apart. While Mandela preached peace and tolerance, Winnie was burdened by hatred and declared war. In the struggle between the freedom of the people and the woman he loved, Mandela made a painful choice.
