The story takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2016. To combat the rising crime rate, a large weapon company developed a fully mechanical police force. They mass-produced and deployed these robotic officers, achieving remarkable results in fighting crime. As one of the developers, programmer Deon (played by Dev Patel) has been dedicated to creating a fully artificial intelligent robot. One day, he makes a breakthrough in his research, but does not receive support from his boss, Michelle Bradley (played by Sigourney Weaver). Unwilling to accept failure, Deon secretly takes a damaged police robot from the company, intending to perfect his research. However, he is intercepted by three armed thieves on the way. Under threat from the criminals, Deon uploads the new system to robot number 22. 22 is reborn as "Chappie," and its birth is set to change the fates of many people...
