Russell (Christian Bale) and his brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) live a life dependent on each other in a poor and isolated industrial town, with the simple wish of leaving this place becoming their only motivation. They work hard every day to fulfill this wish. When misfortune strikes the two brothers, who seek no conflict, Russell is faced with a four-year prison sentence due to an accident. When the long four years finally come to an end, Russell returns to society only to find that Rodney has become a vengeful spirit.
