Leda (Olivia Colman) goes on vacation to the beach alone, where she becomes captivated by a young mother and daughter and finds it hard to look away. The striking relationship between them, along with their loud and troublesome family members, disturbs Leda, reminding her of the fear, confusion, and struggles she faced when she first became a mother. An unintentional act plunges Leda into an inner world that feels strange and ominous to her, where she revisits her past: as a young mother, she made an unconventional choice that led to a series of consequences. This film marks Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut, adapting Elena Ferrante's novel into the screenplay.
