Master thief Zhang Bide (Andy Lau) learns he has only four weeks to live and decides to avenge his father, who was killed by the gang leader (Li Zixiong). To do this, he meticulously plans to rob the financial company next to the gang leader's transportation company and takes hostages, bringing in the high-level negotiator He Shangsheng (Louis Koo), who has been reassigned to a desk job due to offending his superiors. While He Shangsheng and Zhang Bide engage in a cat-and-mouse chase, despite repeated failures, he gradually realizes that the gang leader is actually using the transportation company for illegal jewelry smuggling. Thus, He Shangsheng turns enemy into friend and teams up with Zhang Bide to outsmart the gang forces in a battle of wits. During his escape from He Shangsheng's pursuit, Zhang Bide inadvertently meets a girl named Liang Wanting (Maggie Cheung) and finds a romantic encounter at the end of his life.
