Totila (played by Lars Eidinger) is a scholar studying the Holocaust in Germany. Although his research is highly regarded in the academic community and his future seems bright, this brutal research has pushed Totila's mental state to the brink of collapse. It turns out that Totila is hiding a dark secret: his grandfather was a Nazi who personally killed many innocent people. Every time he thinks about this, Totila feels immense pain. One day, by chance, Totila meets a Jewish girl named Zaji (played by Adèle Haenel), who is bright and cheerful, illuminating Totila's gloomy world like a ray of sunshine. Zaji's grandmother was killed by the Nazis during World War II, and what Zaji cannot accept is that the person who persecuted her grandmother was actually Totila's grandfather.
