Zhijia's father, dissatisfied with his son's marriage, moved to a small island. After Zhijia married Mingyue, they had a daughter named Yulian. However, Mingyue could not resist the temptation of money and abandoned the father and daughter to go to Hong Kong with someone else. As a result, Zhijia became overworked and fell ill, living in hardship, and soon passed away. Yulian was left to rely on her grandfather Changshan to live on the island, where she began a life of wandering as an orphan with her friend Xiaodouzi. Yulian, however, was an understanding child. She quietly helped her grandfather with various tasks, eventually touching his heart, and the two became dependent on each other. At this time, Mingyue returned to the island intending to take Yulian back and make up for her failure as a mother. Changshan, suffering from a terminal illness, reluctantly decided it was best for Yulian’s future, so he forced her to leave by "angry scolding," entrusting her to Mingyue's care.
