In a corner of India, a man is dreaming… He dreams that he has come to his mother with 500 rupees, hoping that he and his mother are no longer in so much pain, but just as he is about to place it in his mother's hands, he sees children like him all around, as well as over a dozen very old elderly people, who immediately surround her, and he is slowly swallowed by the crowd… Born in a middle-class family in a small town in India, she was once an actress. In 1976, she went to Harvard University in the United States to study and fell in love with filmmaking there. During her student years, she shot a series of documentaries about contemporary Indian society, gaining a certain degree of influence. Mira Nair's first feature film, "Salaam Bombay!", depicts the painful life of a small boy struggling in the streets of Bombay, powerfully revealing the tragic experiences of street children with a documentary-style approach and realistic style. Despite being a debut work, it is smooth and mature, winning the Golden Camera Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1988. Since the 1980s, Mira Nair has become an iconic figure representing Indian cinema in the West. Her other films include "Mississippi Masala," "The Perez Family," "Kama Sutra," "A Tale of Love," and the recent HBO documentary "The Laughing Club of India." She is the first female director to win the Golden Lion.
