The film is adapted from a true historical event. The story is set in the sixteenth century when King Henry VIII (played by Robert Shaw) falls in love with a woman named Anne (played by Vanessa Redgrave). He wants to divorce the queen but is constrained by societal morals. Henry VIII seeks out Lord Chancellor Thomas More (played by Paul Scofield), requesting him to sign a divorce decree, attempting to lessen his guilt through Thomas's respected character. Thomas, who has lived a life of integrity, is greatly troubled by the king's unreasonable request, as he understands that those who refuse the king are fated to a bad end. Guided by his conscience, Thomas upholds his principles, refusing to sign and resigning from his position. However, even so, his integrity ultimately does not spare him from a tragic fate.
