In 1927, a large number of impoverished farmers flocked to the JiuFen mountainous area of Taiwan's JinGuaShi to realize their gold mining dreams. The simple tenant farmer Ah Zhu and his brother Ah Wei arrived in JiuFen with the gold rush and rented a small house from the widow Ah Rou. Ah Rou is a poor woman known as the one who brings misfortune to her husbands, and she develops feelings for Ah Zhu over time. The gold rush led to rampant smuggling and vice in JiuFen. The Japanese government sent a talented official, Shibata, to maintain order in the gold mines.
