In a voice-over, a middle-aged man takes the audience back to the small town of Rockaway, where he grew up, filled with fascinating stories revolving around radio broadcasts... Two thieves break into a home, just as a telephone quiz show on the radio selects this house; the thieves answer every question correctly. The next day, the man of the house returns home to find his money and belongings missing, but the prizes from the quiz show stacked at his doorstep. Aunt Bea experiences an awkward blind date when a report on the radio announces an alien invasion; her date abandons her in a hurry. Radio star Roger becomes entangled with a nightclub girl named Sally (played by Mia Farrow), who doesn't get the radio job she wanted but shines in a wartime program. The continuous broadcasts of the masked ranger captivate countless boys, yet the protagonist can never obtain a ranger ring... The New Year's broadcast of 1944 marks the end of all these classic era memories. The film won the BAFTA Award for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design in 1988.
