Duke Tullio (played by Giancarlo Giannini) marries the beautiful wife, Giuliana (played by Laura Antonelli). Although he has a lovely wife, the womanizing Duke Tullio spends all day chasing after other women, which leaves the young Giuliana feeling very lonely. As time goes by, Giuliana can no longer endure this oppressive life. By chance, she meets a man named Daborio (played by Marc Porel). Daborio is a poor writer, and although he has no money, his talent deeply attracts Giuliana, and the two gradually become close. Ultimately, this illicit affair is discovered by Duke Tullio; however, what angers him most is not his wife's infidelity, but Daborio's lowly status.
