The story is adapted from Jonathan Raymond's novel "Half-Life," with Raymond and director Kelly Reichardt jointly adapting it. Set in the 1820s in Oregon, a Western cook named Cookie (played by John Magaro) comes to the untamed West to seek his fortune and meets a Chinese immigrant, King Lu (played by Orion Lee), who is also looking for opportunity. The two quickly bond and partner together to run a business with a milk cow.
