Kurt (played by Tom Schilling) had an aunt who was imprisoned in a concentration camp and ultimately died at the hands of Nazi doctor Karl (played by Sebastian Koch). Although Kurt was fortunate enough to escape to West Germany before the Berlin Wall was erected, his entire childhood was spent under the shadow of the Nazis, which inflicted great trauma on his personality. Afterward, Kurt enrolled at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, and unable to escape the shadows of his past, he poured his despair and pain onto the canvas. By chance, Kurt met a girl named Ellie (played by Paula Beer), whose beauty and vivacity gradually healed the scars within him. However, when the two gathered the courage to take their relationship a step further, they faced strong opposition from Ellie's father.
