During the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, Shaolin lay disciple Hong Xiguan (played by Jet Li) is a member of the Tiandihui, striving to overthrow the Qing dynasty and restore the Ming. Hong Xiguan is betrayed by his fellow disciple Ma Ning'er (played by Ji Chunhua), resulting in his family's murder by traitors.
