Young captain Edmond (James Caviezel) is preparing to marry his beloved fiancée Mercedes, but the first mate Fernand, jealous of Edmond's every achievement, schemes to imprison him for life in the most secure prison located on a remote island. Mercedes also falls into Fernand's arms. After 13 years in prison, Edmond befriends a fellow inmate who helps him devise a detailed escape plan, during which Edmond obtains a map leading to a great treasure. Finally, on a moonless and stormy night, Edmond risks his life and successfully escapes from the prison. After finding the treasure, Edmond uses his wealth to buy a title of Count, becoming the Count of Monte Cristo. Renaming himself, Edmond begins his path of revenge.
