The beautiful and kind but somewhat eccentric Sayoko (played by Minako Ichikawa) lives alone in an old house in the suburbs with a group of adorable cats. She seems to have a natural charm that attracts cats, and she loves these lovely little creatures as dearly as her grandmother did before she passed away two years ago. Carefree Sayoko places the cats in a small trailer and walks along the riverbank each day, singing her unique “Rental Cat” call. Along the way, she encounters several individuals: the lonely and affluent elderly woman Toshiko Yoshioka (Reiko Kusamura), the middle-aged man Goro Yoshida (Ken Mitsuishi), who has been working in Tokyo for six years, the branch manager Yoshikawa (Maho Yamada), who has worked at a car rental company for twelve years, and her former classmate, Shigeru Yizawa (Kei Tanaka), who is involved in the underworld. On lazy, hot summer days, carefree Sayoko and her cats witness the various facets of life, including joy, anger, sadness, and happiness...
