The story is adapted from the famous World War II military event "Dunkirk Evacuation." At the beginning of the war, 400,000 British and French soldiers were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk by enemy forces, facing a dire situation as the enemy closed in. The British government and navy launched a massive mobilization of civilian vessels to rescue the stranded troops. British soldier Tommy (played by Fionn Whitehead) meets Gibson and Alex while escaping the beach, while civilian boat owner Mr. Dawson (played by Mark Rylance) sets out with his son Peter and 17-year-old George to Dunkirk to save soldiers. The three of them gradually rescue naval officer (Cillian Murphy), pilot Collins, and Tommy's group, while fighter pilot Farrier (Tom Hardy) fights valiantly in a desperate situation being attacked from two flanks. The film tells the story from land, sea, and air perspectives; under the siege of the German army, everyone has to fight for their fate to have a chance to return home alive.
