The film's story is based on true events. Under the leadership of Dr. James Murray (played by Mel Gibson), the editorial board is tasked with editing a new version of the Oxford English Dictionary. Given the technological capabilities of the time, it would take a century to complete the dictionary. Dr. James Murray innovatively adopted a method of public participation, allowing English speakers across the UK to contribute definitions by sending them to the editorial team via mail.During the process of collecting definitions, they discovered a doctor named W.C. Minor (played by Sean Penn) who independently contributed over 10,000 quotations, a workload that would be challenging for even professional linguists to achieve. When the editorial board decided to honor him, an astonishing fact was revealed: Dr. Minor was a military surgeon during the American Civil War, who, due to suffering from schizophrenia, had committed murder and was confined to a mental hospital, being considered a madman.A professor and a madman, the earliest English dictionary in human history was thus created by two vastly different individuals.
