Many years after the death of his wife, the reticent Yamahira (Katsuji Mori) has grown accustomed to the caring life of his unmarried daughter, Michiko (Shima Iwashita). On the surface, Michiko seems happy to take care of her elderly father and has never expressed a desire to marry. During his old age, Yamahira finds joy in drinking and chatting with a few old friends from school. Whenever his friends mention Michiko's marriage or suggest introducing her to suitors, Yamahira always evasively declines, though he can't quite figure out what he fears. Still, he refrains from drinking too much to avoid causing his daughter unnecessary trouble. One day, during a gathering with his schoolmates, Yamahira learns that the beautiful daughter of a former teacher, who has cared for him all these years, remains unmarried. After seeing the once lovely woman now aged and haggard, he is taken aback and thinks of Michiko. Subsequently, he hints for Michiko to consider marriage, but she interprets it as her father urging her to leave, causing her great sadness. He gently encourages her, and she reluctantly nods with tears in her eyes. The moment she agrees, he is filled with profound sorrow.
