In a remote mountain temple, scholar Zhu Xiaolian (played by Deng Chao), who is on his way to take an exam in the capital, is brought into a fairyland by a fairy named Peony (played by Zheng Shuang), who falls from a mural. In this strange fairyland, many fairies live freely and happily under the supervision of their aunt (played by Yan Ni), but they are not allowed to develop feelings for men, and any man who intrudes into their realm will face strict consequences. In the fairyland, Zhu Xiaolian meets another fairy, Shaoyao (played by Sun Li). With Shaoyao's help, Zhu Xiaolian avoids the danger of being discovered by his aunt and successfully returns to the human world. However, worried about Peony's safety, Zhu Xiaolian requests help from the master (played by Zeng Zhiwei) in the ancient temple to return to the fairyland. While the fairyland remains a place of music and dance, Zhu Xiaolian finds himself unable to locate Fairy Peony... This film is adapted from "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio" and directed by Chen Jiasong. It marks the first big screen collaboration of the couple Deng Chao and Sun Li.
