As early as 1912, German scientist Friedrich (played by Tom Burke) proposed the theory of "pancontinent," which suggests that all the continents on Earth were once connected and that the current layout was formed due to tectonic movements causing fragmentation. In 1939, despite the ongoing intense war, the Germans dispatched a marine expedition team to the Arctic archipelago of Spitsbergen to search for more evidence that could support this theory. In addition to Friedrich himself and his assistant Leni (played by Jeanette Hain), the expedition included scientists from around the world, who set sail under the leadership of a Russian captain (played by Sven Nordin) heading toward their destination. One side faced the endlessly unpredictable ocean, while the other dealt with the ever-changing situation of war; everything happening on the continent affected the delicate balance among the scientists.
